Furnace Maintenance: Steps Before Turning On the Heat

Contact a local experienced heating and cooling professional to arrange system maintenance twice a year.

As summer winds down, it's time to think about having a comfortable temperature at home during the winter. So, as the air conditioner ends its holiday, take some steps before turning on the heat this winter.

Replace the furnace filter

Consider changing the current furnace filter before using the furnace for better air quality and minimal stress on the system. In addition to a new filter, check the coils and other airflow parts for dust and debris and clean if necessary.

Prepare to keep the heat inside

Look for drafty spots in the home where heat escapes. Typical areas include cracks beneath the doors and windows. If there are broken windows, now would be the best time to repair them to help improve heating efficiency inside the home. A lack of insulation can cause heat to leak and increase energy bills, so consider adding insulation whenever possible.

Remove vent obstructions

Ensure the vents and air ducts are not blocked by furniture. If vents are covered, the home will not be as warm as expected, and it could create a fire hazard. Before switching the furnace on, be sure to clear any blockages.

Perform a practice run

The furnace should warm up to the idea that its services are required again. Avoid winter being the first time to fire up the furnace; consider turning on the heat before cold weather. During the practice session, run the furnace for a few minutes to assess its functionality. If strange noises or smells occur, turn it off immediately and contact a local heating and cooling professional.

Transition slowly to warmer temperatures

A common mistake homeowners make is switching on the furnace for the first time after summer, instantly going from cool to high temperatures. It's best to avoid this approach, as it will place unnecessary strain on the furnace and potentially cause an expensive problem.

It is best to ease the furnace into constant use after it has been idle all summer. Once the temperatures drop, switch the AC off without turning on the heat. As temperatures get colder, switch the furnace to a lower temperature to gradually warm up the home. One should gradually increase the temperature to the desired comfort level.

Schedule a yearly tune-up

Contact a local experienced heating and cooling professional to arrange system maintenance twice a year. The fall is an ideal time to be sure the furnace is ready for the winter, and a professional will be happy to inspect and advise whether that's the case. In addition, if one has an older system, these professionals can make recommendations if replacement is deemed necessary.
